The results of the Couchsurfing competition are in. Casey from Couchsurfing emailed me this morning as he himself is Couchsurfing his way down the west coast of the USA. The two lucky winners who receive a free copy of my book "Everywhere but Missouri, mate!" are Ted from Berkeley, California and Vladas from Vilnius in Lithuania. I stayed with Ted last year, and am happy that he is one of the winners. In case you don't remember, you might want to see some of the 'girls' I met when I stayed with Ted. I'm also happy that Vladas won, since I can deliver his book personally when I meet him in Vilnius in early January!

IF YOU'VE JOINED COUCHSURFING RECENTLY, DON'T JUST SIT THERE LIKE A LONER WITH NO FRIENDS. AFTER YOU'VE LOGGED IN, GO TO MY PROFILE, AND ADD ME TO YOUR FRIENDS LIST. I WILL THEN RECEIVE AN EMAIL NOTIFYING ME THAT I SHOULD ADD YOU TO MINE. DO THIS FOR EVERYONE YOU KNOW ON COUCHSURFING. GO AHEAD AND WRITE REFERENCES. I KNOW IT TAKES A FEW MINUTES, BUT THIS IS WHAT MAKES COUCHSURFING WORK SO WELL. IF YOU HAVEN'T DONE SO YET, UPLOAD A PHOTO OF YOURSELF. IT'S EASY, AND GOD KNOWS WE ALL NEED A GOOD LAUGH!!

Pac-Safe will announce the winner of their DaySafe competition by Monday.

travel back in time

Wednesday 8th December, Madrid, Spain
*scroll down for the latest journal entry. It's at the bottom, mate*

It's a testament to the effectiveness of the modern media that five terrorist bombs can go off in the city I live in, and the first I know of it is a flood of emails from concerned friends on the other side of the world. There have been more explosions around the country in the days since, but to the credit of the Spanish people, nobody seems to be paying much attention to them. It barely even seem to rate as a converstaion topic, unless maybe that's just because I don't understand the converstaion!

Anyway, I for one have had enough of this "I'm-unhappy-so-I'm-gonna-blow-something-up" mentality and I'm going to do something about it. What can one person do, you ask? Well, in reality not much probably, but at least I'm going to have my say. This morning I have designed my very own tshirt, the official 'The Savage Files' response to people who think it's okay to blow other people up. My tshirt is on its way from CafePress, and I will be wearing it with pride.

If you visit the new and exciting The Savage Files Emporium you can grab yourself an official The Savage Files tshirt, coffee mug, mouse pad, or fridge magnet. What a GREAT CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEA! Of course, a few bucks from the sale of each item goes towards the cost of keeping this website online. Setting up a CafePress store is something I've been meaning to do for ages, and finally a handful of twisted nutbags have given me the motivation to do it. I'll be interested to receive any feedback or suggestions as to other designs that you think would be interesting, or other items I should add to The Savage Files range of merchandise!

The Savage Files book is on its way. Reserve your copy now!
At the same time, I have also listed my book "Everywhere but Missouri, mate!" on eBay, an idea that had been suggested to me a number of times. If you click on the link above, it should take you directly to the page where "Everywhere but Missouri, mate" is on auction on eBay. If the link doesn't work, just search eBay for "Everywhere but Missouri, mate!" The starting bid is just ten dollars, so you stand the chance of winning a copy at a significant saving from the original $20 pricetag. If it attracts a few decent bids, then I will list another copy, and another, so even if you are outbid the first time, you'll still have the chance to get a great deal the next day, or the next. Please don't be shy to place a bid, no matter how small. I promise I won't be pissed off if you end up winning it for $10.50. That's just good luck for you. Add the item to 'MY EBAY' so you will be able to keep a watch on it as the auction closes. If this is at all successful, I will look at listing other items on eBay in future- maybe souvenirs from the countries that I travel through? Once again, I'm not above taking suggestions from you- what do you think might sell well on eBay and bring in some much needed funds for The Savage Files?

Even though "Everywhere but Missouri, mate!" has sold exceedingly well through my website, sales in bookstores around town have been slow... to say the least! This morning I returned to a couple of stores that had been carrying my book, and recovered any unsold copies, in hopeful anticipation of a few 'on the spot' sales when I do a book reading at J and J's cafe and bookstore this weekend.
SATURDAY 11TH DECEMBER, 6:00PM, J AND J BOOKS AND COFFEE, CALLE ESPIRITU SANTO 47. NEAREST METRO- NOVICIADO.
There are still a small numer of books in stock in the US, Canada, Australia and England (not to mention Spain!). I desparately need to clear these stocks before I head north to Russia. Even with a complete sellout of stock, my budget for the couple of months crossing the frozen north will be something like ten bucks a day. These books are ready for immediate delivery, so if you can't be bothered bidding on eBay and waiting for the auction to close, order now, and you will receive your book in time for Christmas! That will be one less Christmas gift idea you have to come up with. I can even have it delivered directly to the recipient- as a Christmas gift from you- saving time and postage costs.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING, YOU KNOW!!

Scrolling through one of my favourite travel sites, I came upon this article, titled 'How to (safely) pick up a hitchhiker'. Well worth a read...
